The Archer School for Girls
is located in the heart of Brentwood, a stone’s
throw from the village and the Brentwood School. You
enter from Sunset Boulevard onto a graceful circular
driveway which sweeps you up to the entrance of one
of the most beautifully restored examples of an old
colonial mission-style building that I have seen.

What was once a retirement home is now home to
about 450 lucky girls. It is a fairly new school (celebrating
its eighth year anniversary and the matriculation of
the second graduating class), but their name is on the
lips of many parents who are looking for a rigorous
athletic and academic curriculum in an all-girl school
setting. They moved here about three years ago from
a much smaller campus in Pacific Palisades. Their new
home is over six acres complete with basketball and
tennis courts and a sports field. The seniors have built
themselves their own ‘secret garden.’ In
the future they have plans to enclose the outside courts
with a dome, creating an indoor gymnasium.
I arrived at one of their several
open houses on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the fall.
We were greeted by so many happy smiling faces that
we immediately felt at home. The school went through
a lot of trouble to make our visit a pleasant one –
tables laden with hand-cooked goodies and children everywhere
making sure that we had everything we needed.
