Carlthorp
is located in a residential neighborhood in Santa
Monica. In the last couple of years it has undergone
extensive remodeling and added a new school building
on the recently purchased lot next door. The main
building is an attractive, modern, Spanish-style structure
and sits discretely among the surrounding homes. In
Santa Monica, where zoning and codes are very strict,
you can be sure that the new building blends nicely
into the neighborhood.

The school office is comfortable with plush carpeting,
draperies, and upholstered chairs. During my visit the
school receptionist was attentive and helpful. Then
my student tour guide arrived, a very nice 6th grade
boy with an unmistakably famous last name. He gave me
the tour in record time, and I found myself hustling
after him with raised finger saying “. . . but
wait a minute, what about the . . .”
The campus is small and
compact although the last remodeling has helped solve
the school’s space problem. In 1998 an additional
class per grade was added, in addition to a larger library
and a new science lab. There is a playground behind
the school and another building at the back of the lot
that houses the lower elementary grades. I found the
rooms to be modern, pleasant, bright, and well stocked
with resources. The credentialed teachers here are enthusiastic,
passionate about their work, and willing to stop and
talk when you drop in.
This is a very academically-oriented
school with advanced programs set up for accelerated
learners. The boy who showed me around took a certain
pride in showing me the ‘advanced’ classes
in math, English and reading.
